A career thanks to open source

For the 2012 Hasselt University Science Faculty graduation ceremony (“proclamatie” in Dutch), I was asked to present my experiences as an intern at Facebook.
After working at Nascom for a very brief time, I will soon start working at Acquia!
On January 2, I announced that I was looking for a job. Since that announcement, I’ve talked with >65 companies.
The time has finally come. I’m looking for a job!
My last week at Facebook … it seemed so long until I could finally return to my beloved Anneleen. Simultaneously, time seems to have flown by.
On Monday, I worked on getting my code committed and tied up many loose ends. I got very positive feedback from my manager! :)
On Monday, I finally got Qt committed (if you’ve been reading my blog, then you’ll know that I started this two weeks ago). It cost me about five full work days.
My ninth week here can be summarized very briefly: the work week was very short. Thanks to Thanksgiving on Thursday, we got off on Thursday and Friday.
This week, I finally got around to reporting an issue that has been bothering me for a long time on Facebook.
Monday was the first day after Anneleen left. Obviously a sad day. Plus, due to the lack of sleep the night before she left, I was still feeling very tired.
Facebook, or well, my manager, graciously allowed me to take two days off — I believe in large part because I had been working so hard in the first 5 weeks of my internship.

This workweek was rather uneventful. I just worked very hard on pushing my project forward.
On the Tuesday of the second week, I started feeling very much at home here in the sunny Silicon Valley.
While I obviously can’t publish the details here, the orientation was very cool.
I didn’t expect the goodbye to be easy, but I never expected it to be so hard, either. I think it was one of the hardest things I ever did, on that 23rd of September, 2011.
On July 1, 2011, I successfully defended my master thesis at Hasselt University’s Expertise Centre for Digital Media.
The last blog post I wrote about my master thesis was on June 1st.
The previous blog post covering my master thesis was about the libraries I wrote for detecting browsers and
I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be joining Facebook’s Site Speed team in Palo Alto, California on September 26, 2011 for a 12-week in
In December and January, I’ve continued working on my master thesis, while simultaneously preparing for my exams in January (which I passed without problems).
